Focus on beef cattle
In addition to arable farming, grassland, and free-range turkeys, beef production forms the core of the farm. Around 600 fattening bulls are fed daily—a task that places high demands on labour time, feed quality, and organization.
From mixer wagon to automation
Previously, feeding was done in the traditional way using a feed mixer wagon and tractor. However, as the farm expanded, it quickly became clear that a more efficient approach was needed. The choice was made to switch to an automatic feeding system with a battery-powered robot.
A major advantage is the compact feed kitchen. It reduces construction costs and, thanks to the “first in, first out” principle, ensures consistent feed quality with minimal heating and spoilage.
Maximum flexibility without rails
The battery-powered robot moves freely throughout the barn without rails. This allows for a highly flexible layout and ensures that crossings with other routes, such as those used by a loader, pose no problem at all.
Approximately 10,000 litres of diesel are saved annually
Feeding on self-generated energy
A key benefit: the entire feeding system runs on self-generated electricity. At farm level, nearly one megawatt of solar capacity is installed, which the feeding robot makes smart use of. In combination with 230 kW of energy storage, the system operates largely autonomously, without relying on external power supply.
Significant savings and optimal feed supply
The transition is clearly paying off; approximately 10,000 litres of diesel are saved annually. At the same time, the animals receive fresh feed four times a day, supplemented by automatic feed pushing in between. This ensures consistent feed intake and optimal performance.
Proven in practice
Since its commissioning in 2023, the system has been operating reliably in continuous use, up to 20 hours per day, 365 days a year. Although the technology was still relatively new at the time, the farm is very satisfied, partly thanks to intensive guidance and technical support.
“The system is performing very well. We are extremely satisfied with its performance, maintenance, and reliability,” says farm manager Jörg Fehrenbacher.
